The imperative is used to give commands, instructions, or make requests.

Formation (sinä-person) #

Formation Rule: The imperative is formed from the first person singular stem (without the -n).

Object Cases in Imperatives #

1. Countable Singular Noun #

• Positive: Use nominative

  • Avaa ovi. (Open the door.)
  • Ota kirja. (Take the book.)

• Negative: Use partitive

  • Älä avaa ovea. (Don’t open the door.)
  • Älä ota kirjaa. (Don’t take the book.)

2. Uncountable Noun #

• Always use partitive
  • Juo vettä. (Drink water.)
  • Älä juo vettä. (Don’t drink water.)

3. Partitive Verb #

• Object always in partitive
  • Auta minua. (Help me.)
  • Älä auta minua. (Don’t help me.)

4. Naturally Plural Object #

• Positive: Use plural nominative

  • Pese silmälasit. (Wash the glasses.)

• Negative: Use partitive

  • Älä pese silmälaseja. (Don’t wash the glasses.)

To make imperatives more polite, you can add:

• ole hyvä (please / literally “be good”)
• kiitos (please / literally “thanks”)

Examples:

• Tule sisään, kiitos. (Please come in.)

Plural Imperative (te-form) #

For formal or plural commands, add -kaa/-kää to the stem:

• Tulkaa sisään! (Come in! - plural/formal)
• Istukaa alas! (Sit down! - plural/formal)
• Älkää puhuko! (Don’t speak! - plural/formal)
