KPT variation is a sound change where consonants alternate between “strong” and “weak” forms depending on the syllable structure.

Basic Rules #

Consonants change when:

  • Adding endings that close/open syllables
  • Conjugating verbs
  • Declining nouns

  • sk, st, tk, hk - these combinations don’t change
