What is Vowel Harmony? #

Vowel harmony (vokaaliharmonia or vokaalisointu) is a fundamental rule in Finnish that influences every verb and noun when conjugated or inflected. It determines which vowels can appear together in a word and which suffix variants to use.

The Basic Rule #

Finnish vowels are divided into two main groups. In general, within one word, you will only find vowels from one group OR from the other group. The two groups don’t normally mix.

Back Vowels #

a, o, u

Examples: auto, poolo, hullu, laulu, toukka, aamu

Front Vowels #

À, ö, y

Examples: tyttö, hylly, pöllö, työ, mÀyrÀ, kÀytÀvÀ, myöhÀssÀ

Neutral Vowels #

e, i

These vowels can appear:

  • By themselves: kieli, tie, liesi, tee, tiimi
  • With back vowels (a, o, u): tuoli, piano, poliisi, teema, tietokone
  • With front vowels (Ă€, ö, y): ÀÀliö, tyyli, seinĂ€, kehĂ€, kynsi, yleisö

Vowel Harmony in Word Inflection #

When adding suffixes to words, the suffixes must follow vowel harmony rules.

When Vowel Harmony Applies #

  • Derivation: words ending in -uus/-yys, -mainen/-mĂ€inen, -ton/-tön
  • Noun inflection: adding cases like -ssa/-ssĂ€, -lla/-llĂ€
  • Verb conjugation: forms like -vat/-vĂ€t, -kaa/-kÀÀ
  • Suffixes: -han/-hĂ€n, -ko/-kö

Examples:

  • tuhma: tuhmuus, tuhmassa, tuhmako
  • tyhmĂ€: tyhmyys, tyhmĂ€ssĂ€, tyhmĂ€kö
  • valittaa: valitus, valittavat, valittakaa, valitatko
  • vĂ€littÀÀ: vĂ€litys, vĂ€littĂ€vĂ€t, vĂ€littĂ€kÀÀ, vĂ€litĂ€tkö

Words with Only E and I #

For words containing only neutral vowels (e, i), use front vowel suffixes (-À, -ssÀ, -kö, etc.):

  • kieli: kieltĂ€, kielessĂ€, kielikö
  • kiltti: kilttiĂ€, kiltillĂ€, kilttihĂ€n

Compound Words #

Compound words (yhdyssanat) can mix both vowel groups when combining words from different groups. The suffix follows the vowel harmony of the last part of the word:

CompoundComponentsInflected Form
sivupöytÀsivu + pöytÀsivupöydÀllÀ
iltapÀivÀilta + pÀivÀiltapÀivÀnÀ
jÀÀkaappijÀÀ + kaappijÀÀkaapista
työmaatyö + maatyömaata
syyskuusyys + kuusyyskuussa
maantiemaa + tiemaantiellÀ

Exceptions #

There are exceptions to vowel harmony rules, mostly from loanwords adopted into Finnish. Common exceptions include:

Special Cases: meri and veri #

  • meri (sea): merta, meressĂ€, merellĂ€
  • veri (blood): verta, veressĂ€, verestĂ€

These words use -ta in the partitive despite having only e and i.

Loanwords #

Some loanwords retain their original vowel patterns:

  • analyysi (analysis)
  • olympialaiset (olympics)
  • symmetria (symmetry)

Many four-syllable or longer loanwords ending in -eeni, -teetti, -mentti, -tiivi, etc., typically use back vowel suffixes:

  • appelsiini → appelsiinia, appelsiineita
  • vitamiini → vitamiinia, vitamiineita
  • adjektiivi → adjektiivia, adjektiiveita

Note: There are special cases and exceptions beyond what’s covered here. The rules above apply to most common Finnish words.
